6 Songs that Idolize Chevy Vehicles
Over the years, many musicians have given Chevrolet a nod in their song lyrics. Chevy has long been a household name at home in American music, so it’s worth looking back and reminiscing about the most iconic songs featuring our favorite all-American models.
“Little Red Corvette” by Prince
The world continues to mourn Prince’s untimely passing. The talented artist left us with countless songs that have forever influenced the art, but “Little Red Corvette” is undoubtedly one of our favorites. Sure, the Corvette in question refers to a fast woman rather than the car itself, but the song is still a memorable nod to one of history’s most iconic cars. Released in 1983 on Prince’s album “1999,” “Little Red Corvette” was the singer’s first single to perform better on the pop chart than the R&B chart, broadening his appeal.
“American Pie” by Don McLean
Don McLean’s ode to Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper is one of the most celebrated songs from the 1970s. With a catchy chorus that goes, “So bye-bye, Miss American Pie, drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry,” it’s the perfect slice of nostalgic Americana, which perfectly describes how many Chevrolet enthusiasts see the automotive brand.
“So What Cha Want?” by Beastie Boys
Released in 1992 by American hip hop group Beastie Boys, “So What Cha Want” features the lyrics, “You scream and you holler about my Chevy Impala.” The song was even featured in the 2008 video game “Rock Band 2”, further cementing Chevy’s place in popular culture.
“Ridin’ in My Chevy” by Snoop Dogg
Released in 2008 on his “Ego Trippin’” album, Snoop Dogg’s song “Ridin’ in My Chevy” gives the auto brand some title recognition. The rap opens with “ridin’ in my Chevy and I’m sittin’ at the light,” setting the stage for the urban powerhouse of a song. As with the Beastie Boys’ tune, Ridin’ in My Chevy is also playable in the “Rock Band” video game.
“Tim McGraw” by Taylor Swift
If there’s one genre that mentions automobiles more than rap and hip hop, it’s country music. Taylor Swift’s debut single “Tim McGraw” may have been inspired by the country singer of the same name, but Chevrolet gets a nice mention as well. The song describes Swift’s high school relationship with “a boy in a Chevy truck that had a tendency of getting’ stuck.” The relationship ended when the boy went off to college, giving Swift the inspiration to write the catchy lovesick tune.
“Night Moves” by Bob Segar
The lead single from Bob Segar’s 1976 album “Night Moves” is a coming of age tale of a teenage love affair Segar experienced in his younger days. The lyrics describe the relationship: “Out past the cornfields where the woods got heavy, out in the backseat of my ’60 Chevy, workin’ on mysteries without any clues, workin’ on our night moves.”
There’s no doubt Chevy will continue to hold a prominent place in American pop culture, so only time will tell what future songs will feature the iconic brand.
