While consumers and reporters were treated to an incredible range of the latest in high tech gadgetry at the 2014 International Consumer Electronics Show held in Las Vegas, the biggest news by far was that Chevrolet plans to have full 4G LTE WiFi connectivity in every vehicle in their inventory. They plan to do so by incorporating this technology into their all-new OnStar 4G LTE system in the bulk of their fleet during the 2015 model year.

The First to Get WiFi

The first new Chevys to incorporate 4G LTE into their OnStar system will be the Malibu, Impala, Volt, and Corvette. GM has also recently confirmed that the 2015 Silverado and Equinox will also be equipped with this technology, as well as their entire fleet of heavy trucks and the Spark and Spark EV. By the end of the year it is expected that all new Chevrolet vehicles will come with OnStar 4G LTE capability built in.

According to Senior Vice President of Global Chevrolet, Alan Batey, “Chevrolet is expected to implement the broadest deployment of 4G LTE in the automotive industry. The fact that OnStar with 4G LTE will be available in models that range from the Chevrolet Spark to the Silverado to the Corvette, is indicative of our broad commitment to deliver more value and convenience through smart technology applications. This new, purposeful technology solution will make our consumers’ lives easier to connect.”

One of the Strongest Networks in the U.S.

While some manufacturers have chosen to team up with T-Mobile, buyers who choose these vehicles will find that this service only works in major cities and along the major highways. These are the only areas of the country in which T-Mobile has any towers or networks. It is because of this lack of coverage, that Chevrolet has chosen to partner with AT&T one of the two biggest and best cellular networks in the country.

OnStar 4G LTE technology has been designed to allow multiple users to access the Internet via WiFi at the same time. As an added benefit, AT&T has reached an agreement with Chevrolet to allow AT&T customers to roll their OnStar connection into their Family Share data plans. At the same time this does not mean everyone who buys an OnStar 4G LTE equipped vehicle will have to sign up for AT&T services.

Instead AT&T will offer buyers the opportunity to choose from a range of different standalone data plans. This will allow buyers to choose their own plans and how much they have to pay for it on a monthly basis.

More than WiFi Connectivity

The new OnStar 4G LTE system will offer Chevy buyers more than simple WiFi connectivity. An example of this is that it can be used in conjunction with the Chevrolet MyLink System to help them access a wider array of applications including improved maps, and many others that need access to a high speed Internet connection to function properly. These apps will soon be available directly from Chevrolet’s AppShop and many of them will be available at no cost.

Along with all of these great new features, the new OnStar 4G LTE will serve to improve the entire suite of OnStar functions. According to OnStar Chief Operating Officer Terry Inch, We are focused on constantly improving the OnStar service so that the system continues to remain a trusted value-add for GM drivers. 4G LTE will enable the most powerful OnStar connection ever.” Just one more example of how Chevrolet is constantly working towards making their entire lineup of vehicles second to none in the world.
