Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

The Camaro ZL1 Coupe is the fastest Camaro ever made. This supercar gets all the way up to 200 mph in a hurry. Chevrolet engineers recently took the new Camaro on out to the Papenburg High Speed Oval in Germany for a test spin. They calculated the wind speed and determined the vehicle reached an astonishing 202.3 mph on a 7.6 mile stretch of the proving ground loop. It topped out at 193.3 in the opposite direction. To say the Camaro ZL1 delivers an impressive performance is an understatement. This vehicle excels in every possible performance category.

Papenburg Testing Details

The Camaro ZL1 was tested on the Papenburg circuit with Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3 tires. The tire pressure was set at 44 psi. This is the pressure setting advised for prolonged high-speed drives. No other equipment besides data logging and safety equipment were added to the vehicle. The Papenburg oval has a 2.5 mile straightaway along with 1.3 mile turns featuring nearly 50-degree banking along the top lane. The track’s uber-steep banking empowered the test drivers to race the Camaro ZL1 flat out across the track’s entirety without having to remove pressure from the throttle while turning.

The Performance Car of Your Dreams

The Camaro ZL1 was designed with high-speed races and other aggressive endeavors in mind. The vehicle’s engineers developed an aerodynamic package that minimizes lift without impacting drag. The vehicle was initially tested in standard settings and reached an average speed of 198 mph. The rear and front camber adjustments were moved to zero degrees and the tire pressure was pushed to the maximum permitted sidewall pressure to bring the supercar’s average speed above the 200 mph threshold.

The ZL1 was built with unique aerodynamic features like a stanchion spoiler in the back that provides superior lift/drag ratio compared to the blade version of the rear spoiler. This supercar also features a patent-pending auxiliary transmission cover for oil cooling that minimizes lift along the front end without producing a drag penalty. High-speed stability is maintained thanks to Chevrolet engineers’ fine-tuning of the front-to-back aerodynamic balance.

ZL1 Coupe Stats

If the ZL1 coupe was an athlete, here is how the vehicle’s trading card would read:

  • When equipped with a 10-speed automatic, the ZL1 reaches 60 mph from a standstill in a mere 3.5 seconds
  • It hits the quarter mile mark in slightly more than 11 seconds while traveling 127 mph
  • The vehicle reaches a standstill from 60 mph in 107 feet
  • The ZL1 has max cornering of 1.02g

These times are made possible thanks to the ZL1’s supercharged 650 horsepower engine that is paired to a manual 6-speed transmission.
Additional niceties include:

  • Awe inspiring 20-inch forged aluminum wheels
  • Electronic limited slip differential on the coupe version
  • Magnetic ride control
  • Bembo brakes featuring 6-piston Monobloc front calipers along with two-piece rotors

The ZL1 is Cheaper Than Most Assume

One would think a supercar like the ZL1 would run upwards of six figures. The vehicle is priced at quite the affordable level of $63,435 for the coupe version with a manual transmission. A ZL1 coupe equipped with a 10-speed automatic is only a bit more expensive, selling for about $65,830.
