As you may or may not know, Chevrolet is one of the original bad boys in the sports car market. Starting in the 1960s, the American automaker began to pump out year after year some of the most powerful cars ever built. Today, that trend still continues. Without further ado, here are some of the most powerful Chevy muscle cars of all time.

1970 Chevelle SS 454

1970 Chevelle

In 1970, to combat some of its competitors, Chevy upped the ante with the Chevelle, a powerful muscle car that quickly became one of the most sought-after vehicles of the time and even today. Thanks to an LS-6 V-8 engine, the Chevelle provided an insane 500 pound-feet of torque and 360 horsepower. The exterior also came with two distinct racing stripes, which furthered the appeal of the car. It could also get up to 60 miles per hour in 6.1 seconds.

2016 Camaro V-8

Although the 2016 edition of the Camaro isn’t one of the original muscle cars from the ’60s and ’70s, it still has great aesthetics and a ton of raw power. These two elements combined to make the 2016 Camaro Motor Trend’s Car of the Year. Behind the sheer performance of a 6.2 liter LT1 V-8 engine, the Camaro gets 455 horsepower and 455 pound-feet of torque. This enables it to burst off the line, recording a zero to 60 time of four seconds flat.

1969 Camaro ZL1

1969 Camaro ZL1

One of the earlier editions of the Camaro, the ZL1 offered sporty looks and a monstrous engine in the same vehicle. What made this car faster and revolutionary was that it was the first Chevrolet to replace the iron engine block with aluminum, thus shedding unnecessary weight and providing better top speed and acceleration. With this engine, the ZL1 provided up to 450 horsepower with a 427 V-8 engine. It’s still one of the rarest Camaros and exceptionally hard to find, but if you get one, it’ll take you from zero to 60 in just 5.1 seconds.

1970 El Camino SS

During the golden age of muscle cars, even cars that weren’t exactly known for power received an excellent upgrade. Hence, you have the El Camino SS. This car/truck received a 454 V-8 engine and pumped out about 450 horsepower. This allowed it to go from zero to 60 miles per hour in just 7.6 seconds, although flooring it almost certainly causes a little fishtailing.

2015 Corvette Z06

The most powerful car GM has ever built is the 2015 Chevy Corvette. With a 6.2 liter V-8 supercharged engine, this bad boy pumps out 650hp. Chevy engineers have attainted this feat with an engine similar in size to the LT1 making it one of the smallest compact engines capable of creating 650hp. This puts the Corvette just behind the Ferrari FF in terms of most powerful production engines availabe in the U.S.

It’s definitely hard to peg down just a few of the most powerful Chevy muscle cars of all time due to the sheer number of entries. However, this group definitely shows the superiority of Chevy’s engineers. Perhaps the most interesting part is seeing what’s yet to come.
