Motor Trend Car of the Year

If you, like many of us here at New Smyrna Chevrolet, have been following the evolution of the Chevy Camaro over the course of the last few years, it should not come as a surprise to you that the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro has been named as the Motor Trend Car of the Year. Perhaps this is because the car has finally returned to its pony car roots or maybe it has something to do with the massive LT1 455 hp V8 available to those who want plenty of power. The reality is, that there are a number of reasons the 2016 Camaro is the recipient of this prestigious award.

Let’s Start with Design

Not only is the 2016 Chevy Camaro some 300 pounds lighter than its predecessor, it now sits on the same Alpha platform as the Cadillac ATS. The new look has been significantly refined from the earlier 5th generation. The outer skin offers buyers a fresh new look with fantastic lines. From changes to the C-pillar design to the updated rear quarter window, the entire design gives the Camaro a very agile look that is sure to turn heads everywhere you go.

Power to Spare

The 2016 Camaro offers a range of power plants, all of which offer drivers plenty of power. This year the Camaro can be ordered with a 2.0 liter turbocharged inline four that pumps out a very healthy 275 hp and delivers 295 ft-lbs. of torque. This little beauty can move the Camaro from 0-60 mph in a mere 5.4 seconds when equipped with the manual gearbox.

Next up is the all-new 3.6 liter V6 that hits a full 335 hp and 284 ft-lbs. of torque. This is one of the most powerful naturally aspirated V6 engines in its class beating both the Mustang’s 3.7L V6 and the Challenger’s 3.6L V6 by up to 35 hp. Those who opt for the full bore 2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS will find a massive 6.2 liter LT1 V8 hiding under the hood that develops 455 hp and a matching 455 ft-lbs. of torque, which is 20 more hp than the Mustang GT. All engines can be ordered with either a six speed manual gearbox or an eight speed shiftable automatic transmission.

While you might expect a powerful vehicle such as the 2016 Camaro to lag in overall fuel efficiency, such is not the case. In fact the Camaro SS is rated at 14/26 mpg which is above average for its class and better than the Mustang GT which is rated at only 15/25 mpg.

Safe and Sound

One of the most important factors considered by Motor Trend in bestowing its coveted Car of the Year award is the vehicle’s overall safety rating. While the numbers for the Camaro have yet to be released by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the Cadillac ATS and CTS whose chassis the Camaro shares, have both been given the IIHS’s highest rating of “Good” in five of the most important crash tests and “Superior” in front crash prevention.

According to the review written by Motor Trend, this latest version of the Camaro ranks with some of the biggest names in luxury sports cars for overall performance, quality, and of course luxury.
